Applied Kinesiology

Applied kinesiology (AK) is a form of diagnosis using muscle testing as a primary feedback mechanism to examine how a persons body is functioning. When properly applied, the outcome of an AK diagnosis will determine the best form of therapy for the patient. This technique uses the triad of health - chemical, mental and structural factors - to describe the proper balance of the major health categories. Since AK draws together the core elements of many complementary therapies, it provides an interdisciplinary integrated approach to health care.

Chiropractic Medicine

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a healthy functioning nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body). "Chiropractic" comes from the Greek word Chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand."

Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body's inability to adapt to its environment-resulting in stress or dis-ease. It looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting a musculo-skeletal area of the body which is functioning improperly.

The conditions which doctors of chiropractic address are as varied and as vast as the nervous system itself. All chiropractors use standards of examination to assess and diagnose a patient's condition and arrive at a course of treatment. Doctors of chiropractic utilize many of the time-honoured methods of consultation such as: case history, physical examination, x-ray examination, and referral as necessary for diagnostic imaging such as CT Scan, MRI, and bone densitometry. In addition, they provide a careful chiropractic structural, functional and biomechanical examination, paying particular attention to the spine.

The examination of the spine in particular to evaluate its structure and function is what makes chiropractic different from other health care procedures. Your spinal column is a series of movable bones which begin at the base of your skull and end in the centre of your hips. Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves extend down the spine from the brain and exit through a series of openings. The nerves leave the spine and form a complicated network which influences every living tissue in your body.

Accidents, falls, stresses and tensions (structural, nutritional, emotional, biochemical, etc), overexertion, repetitive and prolonged strain, ergonomics, and countless other factors can result in a displacements or derangements of the spinal column, causing irritation to spinal nerve roots. These spinal changes are called vertebral subluxations. These irritations are often what cause malfunctions in the human body. Chiropractic teaches that reducing or eliminating this irritation to spinal nerves can cause your body to operate more efficiently and more comfortably.

Chiropractic also places an emphasis on nutritional and exercise programs, wellness and lifestyle modifications for promoting physical and mental health. While chiropractors do not use drugs or surgery, Doctors of chiropractic do refer patients to other appropriate health care professionals when those interventions are indicated. In fact, chiropractors, medical physicians, physical therapists and other health care professionals now work as partners in occupational health, sports medicine, and a wide variety of other rehabilitation practices.

Classical Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of therapeutics based on natural laws. The prime law which homeopathy seeks to fulfill is the law of similars - 'similia sililibus curentur' or 'like cures like'. In the way of similars, a patient suffering from a set of particular symptoms is given a minute dose of a substance which in large doses would cause similar symptoms to a healthy person. An example of this would the utilization of homeopathically prepared coffee (Coffea tosta) to treat a type of sleeplessness similar to that caused by the drinking of coffee.

Computerized Microcurrent (Acuscope)

This unique microcurrent instrument gathers tissue energy and operation information and in turn provides a gentle feedback modulated current that accelerates the body's own natural healing abilities at the cellular level. This can be used to eliminate inflammation and both acute and chronic pain. It will also improve blood flow in circulatory-impaired tissues and is effective in restoring circadian cycles and treating stress, anxiety and sleep disorders.

Colour Therapy

How can colour light possibly cause a physiologic effect inside a human body? Common uses:

  • "Blue-light" therapy for some types of neonatal jaundice. Light applied to the skin causes a chemical reaction (photo-oxidation) in blood circulating under the skin, effectively lessening bilirubin levels with the aid of the liver.
  • Production of vitamin D though it is generated by a higher frequency (ultraviolet) rather than visible light.
  • Additional light exposure is well known to cause a beneficial change in "seasonal affective disorder" (SAD), a condition believed to be caused by insufficient light energization through the eyes to the hypothalamus and then to the pituitary gland, which controls the endocrine system.

Therapeutic uses: Each individual cell in a living organism has a specific function to perform. In so doing, it generates and radiates a specific energy; the cellular energy totality is often termed the "aura". The liver radiates the equivalent frequency (harmonic) of red light, the pituitary radiates green, the spleen violet, circulatory system is magenta, lymphatic system is yellow, and so on.

The logic behind colour therapy is this: when a particular organ or system is under active, its auric energy decreases so the appropriate activating colour is projected on the affected area (sometimes the entire body). If over activity is present, such as in excessive fever or inflammation, the obvious remedy is projecting an opposite (depressant) colour on the area.

There are many additional uses for colour therapy and your practitioner can inform you if this therapy applies to your case.

Corrective and Rehabilitative Exercise

Our bodies are constantly subjected to biomechanical forces. When the stability and resilience capacities of our tissues are less than these forces injury occurs-often followed by inactivity, decreased energy capacity in the tissues, diminished function, disuse, muscle weakness and joint stiffness and increased vulnerability to repetitive injury. The role of rehabilitative and corrective exercise is focused on the reversal of this downward cascade. This is accomplished through motivation, identification of and corrective therapies applied to the causative factors, coaching/instruction in a restorative activity plan and identification of future goals and steps to accomplish these.

Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is a science-based field of health care that is based on the acknowledgment of and respect for the principles of: biochemical individuality, patient centered medicine, the web-like interconnectedness of physiological factors, health as a positive expression of vitality, promotion of organ reserves and the need for the dynamic balancing of internal and external forces. Such factors as diet, nutrient input (air, water and food), exercise, traumas, genetic pre-dispositions, attitudes and beliefs are considered.

Homotoxicology (Complex Homeopathy)

This is a therapy based on homeopathic principles which enables deep cleansing of the body tissues, removing old toxins, disease processes and degenerative debris by the use of mixture of remedies used in functional application. This is applied not just on a symptomatic basis (as is classical homeopathy) but on a structured basis addressing function, toxicity and organ dynamics. It is most useful for many of our 'modern diseases' such as autoimmune and post-viral complications.

Lifestyle Coaching and Health Psychology

Getting rid of life's stressors is not enough to thrive. People want their lives to be filled with good health and happiness, enjoyment, good friendships, success and a sense of meaning and purpose and fulfillment. Yet very few people have the ability to realize these hopes because they lack the understanding and know-how to do so.

The tools from positive psychology and life coaching are integrated into patient care to help people overcome the resistance to change and unknowingness which can interfere with their successful implementation of naturopathic regimes, lifestyle changes and their ability to thrive. These tools promote effective self-motivation, self-regulation and self-awareness leading to a wide variety of health benefits.
